Scanning made easy…

For some years to come, conveyancers will be obliged to work in two environments at once  – analogue and digital. Electronic data transmission requires digitising paper-based data, and that, of course, means scanning.

There are two sorts of scanners to think about, desk top (for smaller, “one off” A4 sized tasks) and theatre (for bulkier tasks, up to A3 in size).

The UK’s first monthly on-line journal dedicated to conveyancers!

A good quality desk top scanner can now be had for under £70 – the Cannon Lide 60 flatbed for instance. The two most important features here are the “Scan to PDF” function and the USB port connection, which makes for very fast operation.

Apart from price and functionality, however, the IiDE 60 has other features which will appeal to practitioners. Firstly, and because you can station it vertically, it has a small footprint, thus maximizing desk space. Another benefit we’ve discovered about it’s vertical positioning, is that it stops people putting their coffee cups on it! So it’s ready to use when you need it, without having to clear off files, old bits of paper and assorted junk!!

The cover is spring mounted, which makes it relatively easy to scan pages from text books and other bulkier items.

Another feature which we like is the USB connection, which means that it takes it’s power from the PC without needing a separate transformer or power source. Anything that cuts down on the cabling hanging over the back of the desk and frees up plug sockets is fine by us.

Colour reproduction is excellent - an important consideration in terms of the new HIP regulations.

Software supplied includes ArcSoft PhotoStudio and OmniPage SE OCR. To help keep you organised, the CanoScan Toolbox allows you to customise the three EZ-buttons for common functions.
